Primary Teachers Promoting Chess

At Ficheall, we’ve put together a number of videos as Gaeilge to help múinteoirí ficheall a mhúineadh as Gaeilge. Some videos are designed for Gaelscoileanna (féach thíos) and some are more suitable for English medium schools. A benefit of chess that has emerged for schools, following the roll out of the Primary Language Curriculum, is the convenient opportunity it provides for the transfer of skillsJust as we would utilise the transfer of skills in getting children write a simple procedural piece as Gaeilge, having done procedural writing in English a fortnight before, we can apply the same logic to our chess lessons.

Mar shampla: You’re after rolling out the Ficheall lessons to third class in Term 1. You then brought your whole class (4 teams of 8) to the Féile Fichille in February and had a great day out! Now Seachtain na Gaeilge is just around the corner in March… Why not host a a tournament in your class (or your school) during SnaG?! Follow the simple steps below.

Transfer of Skills

1. Use the short videos below to explicitly teach the names of the pieces. Remember, your students will already be familiar with the English versions of these videos from Term 1.

2. Then teach and role play these few simple phrases to allow pupils interact with each other trí mheán na Gaeilge

Good luck – Go n-éirí leat

Your move – Is leatsa an imirt. / Do sheal-sa

You can’t do that – Ní féidir (é) sin a dhéanamh. / Níl cead agat.

Check / Checkmate – Sáinn / Marbhsháinn.

Teacher, we’ve a problem – A mhúinteoir, tá fadhb againn.

Well done/Good game – Maith thú / Sárchluiche/an-chluiche.

I won / (S)he won – Bhí an bua agam / aige / aici.

It was a close game – Cluiche cothrom a bhí ann.

3. Arm yourself with a couple of tournament-specific phrases & commands and you’re good to go:

Shake hands – Croithigí lámha

Set up your boards – Ullmhaígí bhur mboird.

Queen on her own colour – Banríon ar a dath féin

Begin – Tosaígí.

Vertically – Go hingearach

Horizontally – Go cothrománach

Diagonally – Go trasnánach

Can anything be captured? – An féidir aon rud a ghabháil?

Is there any piece in danger? – An bhfuil aon phíosa i mbaol?

How much is the ____ worth? – Cén luach atá ar an ____?

Time’s up – Tá an t-am istigh.

What was the result? – Cén toradh a bhí ann/ar an gcluiche?

Now that the class are familiar with these phrases, remember to use them throughout the year, as well as during Seachtain na Gaeilge.

New vocab learned, increased social interactions as Gaeilge and great fun in doing so – go diail!!

Tacaíocht agus Áiseanna do Ghaelscoileanna
