Primary Teachers Promoting Chess

Projects

At Ficheall, we engage with other organisations working with children, schools and families. See below for some of our most recent collaborations.

SPHE Conference, November ’23

Ficheall were delighted to present at the @SPHENetwork Conference @MarinoInstitute on the topic of teaching social skills through chess to the students in the Ficheall network which includes over 500 primary schools in Ireland! Among the topics discussed were the impacts and benefits of playing chess on:

          • students’ self-esteem
          • their social emotional learning
          • School Climate
          • the language of Losing and Ability
          • Student Communities of Practice
          • Confidence and Achievement

National Museum of Ireland, Oct. ’23

We had great fun collaborating with the NMI on this project – a new activity booklet developed all about ancient board games & past times. It’s available at reception in NMI- Archaeology. Discover Cú Chulainn’s links to chess and who played chess in medieval Ireland . . .

Ficheall teachers were also on hand at the National Museum of Ireland over Halloween where families and museum-goers were free to drop in to learn the basics or to play a game of chess. The museum had fascinating artefacts related to board games through the centuries and chess in Ireland.
